Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

My family and/or I haven’t had to renew Medicaid coverage in a few years. Does this mean I no longer have to renew Medicaid coverage each year?

No. In response to the COVID-19 federal public health emergency (PHE), Medicaid renewals and terminations paused, even when someone’s eligibility changed. In early 2023, states received new information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which ended the pause on Medicaid renewals and terminations, effective March 31, 2023. This means all 50 states and the District of Columbia are required to restart Medicaid eligibility renewals. Each year, District Direct and the DC Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF) will notify you by mail when it’s time for you to renew your Medicaid coverage.

For more information, go to DHCF’s Medicaid renewal information page. If you need help renewing Medicaid, or would like to know the status of your Medicaid benefits or renewal, call District Direct at (202) 727-5355 / TTY: 711.
