Offer More Than One Health Plan to Your Employees

Small businesses can offer more than one plan to their employees just like large companies.

DC Health Link offers small businesses two options for plan choice:

OPTION 1: By Benefit Level

Employer offers all plans from all insurance companies in a benefit level. The benefit levels are: Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze. Employer picks benefit level.

Silver
or
Bronze
Each employee picks an insurance company and a plan that best fits their needs at that benefit level.

OPTION 2: By Insurance Company

Employer offers all plans, at all benefit levels, from one insurance company. The insurance companies are: Aetna, CareFirst, Kaiser Permanente, or UnitedHealthcare. Employer picks the insurance company.

Each employee can then choose any plan that best fits their needs, and budget, from that insurance company.

No matter which option a small business chooses, the small business is in control of its budget.

Here is how it works:

The small business chooses a base plan (called “reference plan”). The employer never pays more than its contribution to this base plan.
The employee selects a plan and pays the difference, if that plan costs more than the base plan. If an employee selects a plan that is less expensive than the base plan, the employer, and the employee, save money.
The small business receives only one bill even when employees enroll in plans from different insurance companies or different plans with the same insurance company.

Why should an employer offer more than one health plan?

  • Can save money
  • Provide better employee benefits
  • Compete with large companies
  • Enjoy administrative ease, with no extra work to offer more than one plan
  • Still receive just one monthly bill, regardless of how many different plans employees enroll in

Don’t just take our word for it, listen to what employers who offer Health Plan Choice to their employees through DC Health Link are saying:

Our business is based on the fact that one size does not fit all. When we began offering our employees coverage through DC Health Link, we offered all plans from one insurance company. We wanted to provide them with different choices when it came to selecting a plan. After listening to our employees, we started offering our team health plans from a metal level, so that they can choose the health insurance company they prefer. Not only do our employees get the health care coverage they deserve, but, maybe best of all, we see a savings to our business.”

The food industry isn’t exactly known for providing health benefits to its employees. When we signed on employee number one, we made sure Mess Hall signed up for health insurance coverage through DC Health Link’s small business marketplace. We now include health insurance benefits in every offer letter we make to potential employees, and we give our employees the flexibility to pick the insurance company they want by offering a metal level of benefits. It’s just good business. Healthy employees miss fewer days of work. They can see a doctor when they do get sick, get treatment, and back to work more quickly.”

Coffee is about community. When we started Compass, we knew we wanted to be the sort of business that made it possible for our team to live and work in the District. And we wanted to give our team the full range of choices to pick a plan that best suits them. That’s why we offer our team all plans through one insurance company. Through DC Health Link, we're able to make sure that our staff has affordable health care. It's the right thing to do, and it means that our team can focus on making REAL GOOD COFFEE!”
