Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can my company still have waiting periods before health coverage takes effect?

Federal law limits waiting periods to a maximum of 90 calendar days from the date an employee is first eligible for coverage.

Employers offering coverage through DC Health Link will be able to select the effective date of coverage for all newly-eligible employees as either:

  • date of hire,

  • first of the month following date of hire,

  • first of the month following 30 days, or

  • first of the month following 60 days.

Once an employer selects an effective date of coverage, that rule cannot be changed until the next plan year.
