Can I get my coverage reinstated if it was cancelled or terminated?

Generally, no. Unfortunately, federal regulations do not allow for us to reinstate your insurance coverage outside of the annual open enrollment period unless you qualify for a special enrollment period. For example, you may not qualify for a special enrollment period if your coverage was cancelled or terminated because you:

  • Asked for the plan to be canceled or terminated, but later changed your mind
  • Did not pay your monthly premium by the due date required by your insurance company and the insurance company terminated or canceled your coverage following the standard grace period
  • Did not receive notices or invoices from DC Health Link or your insurance company because you did not update your address with DC Health Link

However, if you had a major life change or exceptional circumstance that qualifies you for a special enrollment period, or if there was a problem outside of your control that lead to the cancellation or termination, please reach out to DC Health Link at 855-532-5465. We’ll review your situation to determine whether a mistake was made that caused you to be incorrectly canceled or terminated from your coverage. Please be prepared to provide any information you have regarding dates of calls and payments attempted or made to your insurance company.

In addition, if you don’t think you can afford your monthly premium and your circumstances have changed since you applied for coverage through DC Health Link (income change, chance in household members, etc), please call DC Health Link at 855-532-5465 right away. You may be able to receive financial assistance if you hadn’t received it before or you may be eligible for more financial assistance than you previously received. It is important to update DC Health Link as soon as possible, because once your coverage has been cancelled or terminated, you may not qualify for reinstatement.
