What's the difference between the American Rescue Plan open enrollment and the COVID-19 special enrollment period?
Both the American Rescue Plan open enrollment and the COVID-19 special enrollment period offer DC residents more opportunities to enroll in private health coverage. The only difference between the two is when your coverage would begin.
Under the American Rescue plan open enrollment, your plan starts depending on when you enroll:
|Enrollment date:||Coverage start:|
|April 1 – April 15||May 1|
|April 16 – May 15||June 1|
|May 16 – June 15||July 1|
Under the COVID-19 special enrollment period, you can choose your coverage to start either the month you enroll or the first of next month.
Example: If you enroll April 21, you can choose coverage to start either April 1 or May 1.
What if I can’t afford the premium?
Depending on your income, you may qualify for lower monthly premiums for private health insurance or Medicaid at no cost to you. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, premiums are lower for many DC residents. You can use the Plan Match tool to estimate the lower monthly premium you may qualify for without submitting an application for premium reductions. It takes less than a minute.
